how to get off court probation in san jose ca?

i have a friend who is on court probation for shop lifting and she has been trying to find how she can get off probation but the court tells her they cant tell her that she needs to hire a lawyer. please help. where does she need to go?
ttrust me i know thats what i tell her but thats not what i asked so save the dumb comments.
 
For such a minor thing as this, here's my advice. And no, this isn't sarcasm:

Step one: Self-Responsibility
Step two: Utilize self-responsibility and do the following two things -- a) Realize that the cost of being on probation and hiring a lawyer far outweighs the prize of shop lifting, and b) don't steal. That's common sense.
