How to get Ford Escort key number?

Hi have a Ford Escort 98, have the old (common) problem with drivers door lock will lock but not unlock with out a load of jiggling of key.
Works on passenger door, fuel cap & boot but key looks like a tooth pick it is so worn.
Only have one key for this car and no key code to order a replacement, do fords hold key codes on a database to get a replacement?
Have also read you can buy lock tumbler kits for about £20, but would like new spare key (matching all locks) for peace of mind...
Also are these transponder keys, if so can you code manually without Ford diagnostic equipment?

The answer to your question yes fords hold records of all car keys , no you cannot get it coded anywhere else but fords , Yes you can buy tumbler kits for the locks.
