How to get android 2.2 or even better 2.3 on my Evo?

I have a friend who has gingerbread ( 2.3) on his evo i would like to know how i can get it or ill even settle for froyo for now. thanks
im pretty sure u cant just go to android dot com and download it directly to the phone if so i guess the hour or so i spent trying was a total waste!
