how to find the sample standard deviation?

I am in DESPERATE need of help. Seeing as how I've looked in my book multiple times, i still can't seem to understand how to find the sample standard deviation...
If the standard deviation is not listed in the problem, how would I go about finding it? is there a formula? anything at all to help me find it??
