how to find photos in a computer that have disappeared?

recently my computer had a meltdown and it had to be rebooted, but for some reason it caused all the photos i had on here to disappear, it strikes me as strange because there were still documents on here, i thought if it was going to delete photos it would take everything else also.

was wondering if anyone knew if there was anything i could do get them back, i believe they are lost in the computer somewhere.

i would be extremely grateful if anyone could anything that may be of help
