How to edit photos in photoshop to achieve this dreamy/old effect?

How do I edit using Adobe PHOTOSHOP CS4 to achieve the 'after' effect on the right in the following photos:

What *SPECIFIC* filters, adjustments, overlays etc. and steps can I use to achieve this old, dreamy kind of effect on photos like in the examples above?
Any suggestions would be much appreciated or even links to (again - specific!) tutorials would be very helpful! ^ ^
