How to ease a kitten into going outdoors?

My husband and I rescued an indoor/outdoor cat a year and a half ago, and we couldn't stand to keep him inside full time. Now, he goes out and comes in through a window in the basement.

We were planning on getting another kitten at some point in the near future, so here's our issue:
We don't want to keep our cat inside 24/7 because we don't feel like that is fair to him; also, he's used to going to the bathroom outdoors. However, we will not let the kitten outside immediately. Once she is fixed and has all of her shots, we will begin to let her out.

My question is, how do I know when to let her out, or do I somehow ease her into it? The only other time we had an outdoor/indoor cat from the kitten age, my husband's father had let him out by accident several times.

Please, do not tell me how unsafe it is for cats to go outdoors or whatever. I know the pros and cons, and I also know my own cat and what he is happier with. If all you are going to do is tell me not to let the kitten or my cat go out, you will be reported.

Thank you to everyone who has a real answer :)
