How to dye my hair honey brown?

My hair is light brown and i dyed it black about 1 year ago and tried dying it light brown about 3 months ago and my hair got even darker. So i was thinking about paying some money at a salon to get it to the color i want but they're saying that it might not come out the color i want because the bottom of my hair are too dark. So what can i do to get my hair honey brown? do i have to lighten it first ? and how do i do that myself?
please help!!
