under the hood on the emissions sticker it will say what the timing should be set at. On these motors there is also a wire that has to be disconnected. it's like gray with a white stripe. the connector is located around the passengerside firewall around where the blower motor is. this must be disconnected first, then adjust timing, then reconnect. For the most part the timing is dynamic.. (i.e. the computer controls the timing). you're doing a hard set with what you're describing.
