How to do abb exercises properly?

When i go to the gym and use an ab machine, i feel everything in my abs. However when i try exercises at home, such as planks, bicycle kicks, and leg lifts, i barely feel it in my abs, and i feel it mostly in my back. I know that this is not good, and im unsure because i follow the instructions or even videos on how to do different ab exercises very well, but i still have pain in my back. Can anyone tell me how to properly feel or contract my abs?
