How to display an error message without reloading the form? HTML/Javascript/Colffusion?

I have an HTML contact me form, what's supposed to happen is if I leave one field blank and try to submit it's supposed to give an error message, but on top of the form and its supposed to happen without reloading the rest of the page, any ideas anyone?
I do know AJAX, but I have to use either javascript or CF =/
I just need to have one main error message at the top of the form, not in an alert box
