How to disable or reset a 1997 toyota corrola factory alarm?

I have replaced my 1997 toyota corolla battery and now I cannot start my car at all and cannot open the car door without the alarm sounding off. When I purchased the car I did not receive a key remote to the alarm, only a key to manually unlock/lock the car. Therefore I never even knew it had an alarm! Otherwise I would have purchased a remote for it. Now I have no remote and cannot start my car. The manual is telling me that I am able to reset it however the process it is telling me to follow is not working. I have tried nearly anything and everything- I have called mechanics and searched the web high and low and am running out of patience and solutions. Is there anyway possible to reset or disable the alarm on my car? And if there is please be as specific as possible how to and where there may be a reset button. I am desperate! Please help me!
