How to diagnose a Trek bike grip shift problem?

You should hear a click when you change gears. There is a spring on the inside of the shifter that keeps it place.

The grip shifter on the left handlebar for the front/chainwheel derailleur still moves the cable and shifts gears but doesn't hold its position, it just slides back to the middle position...it won't stay on 1 or 3. Did something break inside the shifter?
