How to diagnose a Jeep transfer case problem?

I recently purchased a 93 Jeep Cherokee. the four wheel drive won't engage. the shift level will move to the 4hi position, but won't engage, and it won't go into N or 4Lo, we have tried everything, parked, neutral, rolling in drive, rolling in neutral, it feels like the level is just bending or torquing something. was wondering if anybody had a clue?
