Well, think about a specific civilization or culture. The immediate questions you would ask inquire about their government, occupations, technology, importance of community, maternal/paternal culture, etc.

The main features of a civilization are what define how the people live(d). Are they free or oppressed? Agricultural or technological? Is there a major emphasis placed on any particular artistic cultural aspect (such as the use of drums in some African traditions)? Etc. Essentially, it's what makes the civilization as a whole the same or different from others.
 
How do you decide whether something is a main feature of a civilization?

For example, why will the government or the occupations be a main feature?
