How to create good light graffiti using a Nikon d40?

So I know that I'm supposed to make the exposure last as long as I can and lower the aperture and ISO, but how exactly do I do this? I just got my D40 two weeks ago, and I still don't know exactly how everything works. (I bought it used and it didn't come with a manual.) When I messed around a bit and found the ISO, the lowest it would go was 200, and Auto, when I heard that a good ISO for light graffiti was 100. and what about aperture and exposure? how do i change that? and settings? do i use auto, or night scene?
i have the tripod and lights, now all i need is how to actual SET my camera this way. Can anybody help with that?
