How to cook habaneros without losing the spice?

Today I cooked meatballs with habaneros in them. I tried some of the chilli raw and it was unbelievably spicy!! When I cooked the meatballs and ate them, however, there was barely and spice at all. Is there any way to cook these specific chillis without dulling the heat by much?
