How to convert VLC Media Music files into a mp3 that can be placed into Itunes?

I got some music that instead of automatically saving it to my Itunes library it saved it into a VLC media player file. Now I am unable to play these songs in anything but VLC and am unable to save it to my itunes for later placing on my Ipod. I've looked around the net on how to try and convert it over to a file that is compatible with Itunes but am unable to find a conclusive answer that actually works. How can I convert these files into something that I can actually use somewhere other than my computer, and place it on my Ipod for on the go listening? How might I stop it from happening again? Any and all answers will be very helpful. Thank you.
