How to convert files that play through Media player, play though itunes?

I have files that play through media player and i want them to play thought itunes so i can burn them.
Because for some reason it doesn't burn when i have media player files.
Can anyone help?
Something simple and free.

Try mediacoder. it's free, and works well.
But if it's too complicated (it is pretty complicated) then try handbrake. With a combination of that and DVD43 (another Software) you can also rip DVD's in those formats (most newer dvd's don't work very well though).
