How to call a Nigerian mobile phone from the US?

My contact in Nigeria gave me this number:

00-615-XXXXX

And so I tried dialing from the US

011 + 234 + 00 - 615 - XXXXX

And it didn't work. I tried without the 00 with only one 0.

Is there some trick to getting this to work?
