How to buy a new iphone?

Okay I'm pretty new at these stuff. I was wondering if I can go to an Apples retail store and buy an iPhone 3Gs (16 GB) for $199 and then go to a local AT&T store and have it activated but keep my current phone number. (my current phone provider is Virgin Mobile but they merged with Sprint) i was wondering if i can still use the same number?
