How to Boost Self Confidence?

Life is pretty good for me. I'm a 16 year old high school Sophomore. I'm a devoted football player and a pretty successful track and field athlete. I have a lot of friends, and a lot of girls are interested in me. I also maintain very good grades.

However, I have always struggled with a self confidence problem. My football coaches and friends have called me out on it. Just last week, my coach took me off to the side to talk after our last game for the 2nd time that season. He said something along the lines of, "Why are you always so gosh dang nervous? You could have any girl you wanted if you set your mind to it. Get a girlfriend, break out of your shell, just get it out of your system." Besides that, I have a reputation of being awkward with girls I like. My ex refers to me as the awkward ex, and my friends make jokes about it time to time.

I'm a naturally quiet person, and have come to accept that, but I want to be able to step out and be loud, sometimes even obnoxious. I'd like to be able to step out of my comfort zone once in a while, and really get to meet different people without that fear in the back of my mind. I want to be able to go out with a girl, and show who I really am, not just sit back silently panicking on what to say. I want to be able to talk loudly, and have people listen.

My only question is HOW? I'm willing to try anything.

Do I need to just bite the bullet and make choices against what my self conscious thoughts tell me?
