How to become interested in sports?

I have a lot of friends that are interested in pro sports teams and talking about sports from high school to college to pro. I feel left out in their conversations and kind of out of place. I understand that interest in sports often comes from the father, but since i never met my father and was raised just by my mom, i never really grew up into sports. I'd like to learn more and become more involved in them but i don't know where to start.
