How to become a manga artist and what materials are needed?

My best friend and I are aspiring to become manga artists. We want to start practicing now, but we don't know what materials we need. Yes, we know pen, ink, paper, pencils, and screentones...but what kind and where to get them? We want to start cheap because we're not exactly professionals yet. I plan to be her "assistant" because she's the main artist. But what can an assistant do?

We are complete amateurs and need some guidance.

Please don't say that we aren't Japanese and can't do this. Be supportive. If you aren't going to be supportive then don't answer this question.
