How to become a lawyer?

I really don't want to be a lawyer, I want to be a writer. But i am currently writing a story where one of my characters want's to be an author. i am only 13 so can someone please explain in a simple and painless way how to become a lawyer?

ALSO! what classes should you take in college to become a lawyer? my character will be a girl in her early twenties. how often will she have to atend these classes? what are some good colleges for this career in new york?

oops, sorry i meant to say "i am currently writing a story where my character wants to be a LAWYER" not author, sorry... :-)
 
You have to obtain a bachelors degree first. That is your undergrad degree. The bachelors degree can be in any field, but most people major in Political Science, others in History, Communication etc. It can really be any field, but these are among the most favorite fields for an undergrad.

If you want to go to law school, that would be graduate school. You would have to take an admissions test, called the LSAT. If you take the LSAT and get a high score and also have a high GPA in your previous major as an undergrad, you can apply for law school and are likely to get accepted. Law school usually takes 3 years to complete. After these 3 years you take the bar exam to get certified to practice as a lawyer.

As for schools, why don't you do Harvard? Not that close to New York, but not that far either. Maybe NYU also has law. Just look it up on google and type in Law Schools New York.
 
A student first has to go to a four year college and earn their Bachelors degree. They can choose from many different majors to study. They would need to have good grades (at least a 3.0) and then they would apply to law school. They would have to take the LSAT first. Which is like the ACT/SAT high school students take to get into college.

Law school would be a full time pursuit. Going full time, it would take 2 years to complete. After graduating, all law students must take and pass the state bar in order to practice law.
