How to be a good tutor?

I am a grade 10 student that is starting a tutoring job with a grade 8 student. I have never tutored before, but I need tips and pointers. Am I supposed to bring candy/treats/stickers? do I act as a teacher or just help them through their homework? Do I come up with a plan, worksheets, and textbooks etc? What exactly should I bring and do to prepare for the job? any tips on how to be a good tutor would be helpful! thank you!

It depends on what the program you're in wants, but when my students helped younger ones, they explained things in terms the other kid could understand and shared tips that had helped them in the subject. It's more like-peer to peer rather than teacher to student. Try to find out what the student wants, why he's there, ask what you can do to help; make sure the 8th grader knows you aren't going to make fun of what he says or put him down. If one way doesn't work, try another.

stickers? lol not for an 8th grade student..you dont have to take treats, unless you want it to be a good relationship lol Dont act like a teacher, they probably have enough with their school teacher. To prepare, I think you should go over subject problems you might be doing and make sure you know how to do them. That will let you explain better. Ask them questions like, do you get it? do you know whats next?...Help them but dont give them answers...Good Luck!!
