How do I attach a lounge line to a horse? I have seen people do it so many different ways. Some people attach it to the bit? If I attach it to her bit how to i attach it exactly? It is an eggbut bit
******10 points if you can include a pic******

Racheal? Do i make it go over her nose or under her chin?
Ophelia? The link doesn't work

I would NEVER longe a horse on the bit. The risk for mouth injury is way too heavy to do that. Please get a longeing cavesson or use the halter for longeing. A bit should only be placed in educated and interactive hands of a rider...think about it.

Don't attach a lunge line to the mouth - hauling a horse around by the gob is not nice. Use a lunge cavesson; there will be little rings to clip the lunge line onto. It is not expensive.

"Ophelia" is the latest incarnation of spammy nonsense. Don't click it, just report and it'll come back under another name.

Don't don't don't! Even just the weight of the lunge line will be painful on the bars of the horses mouth. If you pull on it, it will be so painful the horse won't be able to concentrate on what you are asking. Always attach it only to a noseband

Call me old school, but never would I lunge in a bit of any sort. The drag is too great from weight of a 20-30-line no matter how light. Drive in the bit; then only after much work in a bitting rig attached only to a surcingle with the appropriate amount of slack or contact to account for head movement. After that ground work, get on and use your hands on the reins not 2pound weights.

put the clip up through the ring of her bit, take it over her head over the head piece of her bridle and clip it to the top of the ring on the other side so the clip is upside down. lunge with the clip awayy from you so you can't see it

The correct way is to take the lungeline, pass it up through the bit, over the horse's head so it rests over the poll (top of the head , behind the ears, where the bridle rests), run it down the other side and clip to the bit. the Clip should be on the opposite side of you (outside of the lunging circle.)

Otherwise, you can buy a lungeline attatchment that snaps to both rings on the bit and has a ring inthe middle so that you can clip the lungeline to it.

I tried to find pics, but nothing available!

Both these methods are correct because they put equal pressure on both sides of the bit. Never snap to just one side.

Eggbutt bits are easy to longe with. The safest method is to run the longe line through the inside bit ring, over the poll, and attach it to the outside bit ring. This method of attaching the line must also be changed each time the horse changes direction. This method has a slight gag effect, raising the bit up and applying pressure on the corners of the mouth and placing pressure on the poll, but puts less lateral pressure on the bit. Helps there to be less tension, but lots of control. Do not attach the longe line just to the inside bit ring, as the outside ring can slide through the mouth when the line is pulled and damage the horse's mouth. Also do not run the line through the inside bit ring, under the chin, and attach it to the outside bit ring, as this causes the bit to pinch the horse's jaw, alters the action of the bit upward to put pressure on the roof of the horse's mouth, and because it causes more pain than control, the horse often resists the pressure and will not perform properly. You could have trouble with your horse locking its jaw when you ride if you longe the wrong way. Hope this helps, here are a couple pictures for you!

Here's the full site with that page of how it is supposed to be:

PS: This isn't just a dressage technique, it aids with dressage. Hunter/jumper/eventer compatible.

Good luck!

Hook it where the rein goes just switch the hook to the other side when working on that particular side. If you have a hard handler and doesn't want to listen and gives you major problems you can get a lungeline with a chain and hook it through the side of the halter over lap across the nose and hook it to the other side of the halter. Do not hook a chain to a bit. You may also just hook it where you would hook the lead rope. Good luck!
