How to ask/get this guy to have sex with me?

So first of all I am a virgin and I would really like to have sex with one of my friends. I am 21, and I'm very sure this guy is physically attracted to me, and the only reason I have not had sex is due to trust issues and personal reasons and he is the only one I feel I want to do this with. I have known him for 4 years and have been secretly in love with him. I was thinking of telling him this weekend that I love him. Here's the thing though... we have known each other for 4 years but our friendship has been off and on due to all this drama I wont go into and that was mostly his fault. We never dated because it was always a bad situation (long distance or seeing other people). He apologized to me a few months ago and we have been trying to recover our friendship but things are still awkward. We used to kiss a couple of years ago but stopped due to our friendship ending, and a few months ago when he apologized it got really emotional and he held me but at the time I had no idea what to do and did not take advantage of the perfect situation to get physical. I am not desperate. I just really want to do this with him and due to my trust issues he is the only guy I feel sure I want to do this with. Any ideas for us getting back to physical land and working our way up to sex? As I said I am telling him that I've been in love with him for the longest time hopefully this weekend.
