How to approach people?

I'm going to middle school this school year, but I'm worried about making friends? How can I approach people?
I remember when I was in kindergarten it was as simple as going up to someone, smiling and saying, "Hi, my name is Kristi :)."
How can I approach people that can become potential friends?

Umm. You could start out with sitting next to someone(or someone that is sitting next to you) Just say hi my name is ____" And follow that by a compliment like "I love your shirt or shoes!"
My first day : I sat near my friend and a bunch of new people, and my friend this new girl and me had a tiny conversation...then 2 days later i saw that girl sitting alone at lunch and said"hey your in my class arnt you?" ..Now we are BFFS??

Around your age is when people start to make little groups that aren't much, but pave the way for high school. So this is a pretty important time. I just wouldn't make a big deal about it. And don't listen to people who say that your middle school / high school friends don't matter when you get older, because although there is truth to that, you are young and this IS important to you, and not a lot of people understand that. If you have a problem approaching someone let them approach you. And the way to do that (I don't care what ANYONE says) is to BE approachable: That means smile, be friendly and helpful, don't start a lot of drama, listen to people. Find people (and you will) that you have something in common with and hang out with them. Chances are you will have more in common than that. Just don't worry and let things happen naturally. Things will work out.
