i was wondering what are the tools or techniques used to create a vignetting effect when taking pictures??

Or does anyone know a program apart from picnik.com that can create the vignetting effect by the click of a button?

You can find vignetting filters or you can make your own simply by cutting a hole in thin cardboard and holding it over your lens during the taking of the photo. You can buy pre-cut filters that have varying shapes such as hearts, etc. There is one brand that is no longer made here in the US that had a pretty big variety but right off-hand I don't recall their name. I have some somewhere and will look to see if I can find them and then edit this answer.

You can do that physically with a filter (that is too small for your lens). Either stack a few of them in front of another, or use a step-down--and the corners will be chopped off.

Or use a cheap lens at wide open. Most lenses will do that, but less expensive ones suffer more.

Adobe Lightroom will also do that for you.
