How to achieve a higher head carriage?

Just to set it straight - it's not like this horse is going round with his head on the ground, it's probably where the average horse has it.

Basically, I've been riding this stallion and we have been working nicely, on the bit, using his back and going nice and relaxed. Thing is, I was wondering how to encourage a higher head carriage. He used to be very highly trained in dressage and peformed all the high school moves, so I know that he can do it, so I was wondering how I can encourage him.

Is higher head carriage something that goes with old age? He is older and stiffer (something we have been working on) so there may be no point in trying if he will be unable to do it in his old(er) age.

Any help is appreciated, thanks :)
He used to have a high head carriage, especially when he did high school, which is why i'm interested in trying to get him to do it now, i'm not jsut acting on a whim.

Higher head carriage comes from the horse using their hind quarters to support the majority of their weight...you do NOT want to try and force the head up...if you dont know how to get it from a horse dont even attempt. many riders think higher head carriage means up with the hands so the horse has to lift his head. this creates a tight back hollow and tension. if you want that head carriage then find grand prix dressage trainer and have them do it...I can do it now as I know what is needed but before when my horse began his training i didnt touch it with a ten foot pole until my trainer taught my horse then myself.
