how should one read poetry?

how does one begin to dissect a work of poetry? what's the general idea one has to bear in mind in order to effectively and completely absorb a work? i.e. understand the work in its entirety. when i read poetry i mostly see a lot of words that make half-sense. it's almost like the writer(s) are using words to not so clearly convey idea(s), the emphasis is not so much on clarity but delivery and aesthetics. would this be a start?
