I want to be able to hike Barr Trail to the top of Pike's Peak and back down. I moved to the area back in June and my in-laws will be visiting this summer. They're very active, outdoorsy people and I wouldn't be at all surprised if they wanted to hike it. My husband also wants to hike it sometime this summer.
I'm not in the best shape right now. The increase in elevation and the thinner, drier air took a while for my body to adjust to, so I lost a lot of the muscle tone I had built over the previous winter and gained some of the weight I had lost. But I've been better lately about getting to the gym and I can feel a difference in my lung capacity already.
We went hiking a few times last summer, but it was always a struggle for me, possibly because I was still dealing with the altitude change. I don't want to have to quit halfway up. So I'd like to know what exercises I can do that would get me into better shape and prepare me for a serious day of hiking. Any tips would be much appreciated.
