How should I react after reading the e-mail my favorite teacher has sent me?

So, I e-mailed to my all-time favorite teacher (no longer teaches me) an appreciation video during the holidays in which I thanked him for helping me achieve and become the person that I am today..

He started the e-mail nicely by saying that he can only imagine the time it took to me to do this video, and blah blah blah..

He then said the following:

"I have to tell you that you don't need to thank me for anything. I was hired to do my job and that is what i did. It is very gratifying when one is able to touch a person. That is why I love doing what I do. I always believed that you were capable of doing everything you wanted if you really made a commitment to yourself. I only showed you the path, you were the one who had to walk (run...) through it.... and you did. You should be proud of what you have achieved."

I couldn't believe what I was reading at that time. I felt like I was having a huge compliment rejected.. How can I understand the intentions of what he was saying? Was he trying to put a limitation to our friendship? Was he feeling so flattered to the extent that he forced himself to become humble?

I'm really confused.. Please help me out here..

Thank you in advance..
