How should I learn my one year old to drink for a sipping cup?

I know she should already be drinking out of one, like a champion, but I tried for months and months now just to teach her, but she refuses.
She only makes a mess all over herself.
How should I teach her to drink from one?
and what liquids should she mainly drink from a year old?
