How reliable are the 1999 and newer Ford Escort?

I'm looking at trading my 1999 jetta for a Ford Escort ZX3 Sport, and I wanted to know if they were reliable and if they are expensive to get fixed? It's a 5-Speed with a sunroof and has 109,500 miles on it.
