How practical is it to pursue a degree in history?

Now I would be lying to myself and anyone else who knows me if I said I wanted to do anything with my life outside of history. But here is wher the dilema comes in, I'm not exactly sure I would want to be a teacher. My overall goal would be to go to school for archeology, but then I read online that there are less then a hundred of them employed nation wide, so I figure that may be slightly impractical. So that leads to my real question, outside of teaching, how many job oppurtunities truly exist in the feilds of history? I mean with goverments cutting out everything non essential now a days, what could be left?
