How on earth was the antenna on the Chrysler Building fitted in the '20's,

since even today climbing it to ? perform routine checks, by staff, is a major and dangerous operation taking hours
 
Well, the spire was assembled in 4 pieces. The bottom part of it was built INSIDE the building, then lifted up on top of the dome with a crane (don't forget that buildings can be built with cranes attached to the side of the building). The rest was just stacked on top in about an hour and a half.
