How old of a street bike is too old to buy ( if it's well maintained)?

I want to buy my first street bike--and get my M1 license, but I want to start with a older cheaper one for learning. Any recommendations on make, model and year, or ones to stay away from. How old is too old; I also don't want to be made fun of for riding around on a "classic" lol. Thanks.
