I have a 2007 Chevy Silverado with the engine oil life system. The system shows you what percentage of oil life you have left. When this gets down low I thought a light would come on and tell you to change the oil which would give you about 600 miles to get your oil change. I have never taken my truck to that level. The dealership says I should change every 3 months but than isn't this contradictory of the engine oil life system. Can someone explain this oil life system to me without trying to sell me an oil change. I'm confused, thanks in advance

Don't pay any attention to that. Change it between 3 and 4 thousand miles. My escape has that ind if you do what it says it would be about every 7 thousand miles and that's way too long. 3 months is way too soon if it don't have 3000 miles on it. They just want your money.

I never go by time only miles most silverados are rated to go up to 7500 miles from oil changers. I most of the time do 5000 miles 3000 miles if it heavy city or off road driving. Its your call. If you check the level often and are an easy driver you can go longer. The system is smart and it will learn from you and when you reset the system so if you change it at 3000 miles after a while it will set itself to be changed at 3000 miles and warn you when you would change it.

You can read the manual. It explains the requirements.

The oil life monitor goes from 100% (new oil) to 0% (bad oil) and they recommend that you make an appointment to change your oil at about 10%. GM did lots of testing and feels that their system can properly judge oil life so use it. If it didn't work they would end up with hundreds of millions in warranty repairs. Other manufacturers like Honda have a similar system so it seems likely that its a good idea that works well.

Of course the dealer says 3 months. Dealership profits mostly come from maintenance and repair work not vehicle sales.
