How often do you find a pre-existing fictional character of similar design as your own?

I guess what I'm really asking is: how do you respond to finding out your character has "been done before" in one aspect or another?

I was planning on creating an anthropomorphic cat that used a sword but then I realized Jubei from BlazBlue: Calamity Trigger already existed
