How much would you pay to offset -- literally -- the impacts of flying?

California's San Francisco Airport is on its way to becoming the first in the nation to offer passengers a chance to purchase carbon offsets to mitigate the impacts of their flight. San Francisco's Airport Commission has authorized the program, which will involve a $163,000 investment from SFO, but is still working out the details with 3Degrees.

"We'd like people to stop and consider the impacts of flying," said Steve McDougal, executive vice president for 3Degrees, a San Francisco firm that sells renewable-energy and carbon-reduction investments.

Airport kiosks will offer the offsets to passengers, and although prices have not been set they could be as low as $2 or as high as $36 for international flights. Michael Wara, an expert in this area and an assistant professor at Stanford Law School says that offsets ought to be registered after they have been sold, with guarantees that they will not be used again.

Several airlines have been offering this service for nearly a year -- Continental, Delta, Virgin Atlantic and Qantas all offer passengers a means to satisfy their conscience and benefit the environment.

What do you make of this experiment, and how long do you think it will be before other airports offer passengers a similar deal?

Wow, what a con job! I bet that money goes right into their pockets! And when will this stop being "optional?" Because usually when they want to implement something, they make it gradual by making it "optional" first before making it mandatory!
