How much would it cost to put a 1.6-2.0 L diesel in a toyota pickup?

I am wondering the type of bank I would have to put down in order to put a diesel engine in one of the older toyota pickups like 1990-1994. I live in Southern california and I have just realized the rediculous mileage that people are getting from their small diesel engines in europe. Why doesn't vw make those cars in the US?

ANyway I'd like to know how much, the mpgs I could expect and also how much more it would be to convert to biodiesel.
