How much would it cost to backpack across Europe?

The plane ticket will be your most expensive single purchase, between $1000 and $2000, search online for the best deals. I too recommend a eurail pass. These cost between $500 and $800 depending on how long and how many countries you want to visit. Visit eurail.com for more information.
Northern and Western Europe will be more expensive than Southern or Eastern Europe, so some of it depends where to go. If you get a guidebook (I like Lonely Planet's "Europe on a Shoestring") you can see the typical prices for meals and accommodations in various places. Hostels will be cheapest, between 10 and 30 Euros per person per night depending on where. You can also save money by buying basic food at grocery stores instead of eating out all the time.
Have fun and good luck! Buy your plane ticket soon.

=Depending on how cheap you want to be, I'd say $3,000-5,000 total, less if you're super frugal and lucky (ie great deal on flight, and camping instead of hostels)

i did it a few years ago.
it all honestly depends on where in europe you want to go, you will find big price differences from city to city from everything like soft drinks to hotels. hosteling in europe is the life saver for backpackers. in most cities you can find somewhere to sleep from 30-100 euros a night. excluding the flight there and home your probably looking at roughly 1500-4000 all depending on the level of comfort you want, shopping, you cant forget food, hostels and hotels, transportation (euro rail is good way to get around) good luck!
