Hi, There is a car i am interested for sale and they say the drivers side window does not work the windows are electric and they said it will need a switch, will it cost me a lot ? cheers julie.
Its Volkswagen Polo1997 P reg.

If the Passenger window works i don't think it is the switch it is most likely to be the motor in the drivers door .

there is no way to tell if it's the switch or the motor unless the switch is obviously broken. I wouldn't take their word that it's the switch. If the car is 7 years old it's probably the motor. A motor for a door window is around $50 depending on the vehicle. You can check autozone.com for prices. A switch usually is $10-$20 and the labor for this is usually as much as the parts cost..maybe more..I would say $150+
If you are tech savy/handy you can probably do this yourself but you would likely need to drill out some rivets and remove some paneling and risk breaking parts and the window which would be much more expensive to replace. I replaced my door motor and switch in my 97 camaro for $65 total. I found a detailed step by step instruction page online by a camaro enthusiast so I did it myself.
You can always call a local repair shop/dealer to ask what the charge would be to replace a switch/and or/window motor? they can estimate the charges for you as well.

make and model would help....ballpark £30 for a electric window motor mech from a breakers....dont buy new.

If it's just the switch, then it won't cost you much if you go to the junk yard. They'll probably just sell it to you for $5 or so.

Another option is to look on E-Bay.

Another thing, if it's just a switch, ask them to fix it before you buy it.
