How much was trench warfare used in the civil war?

Did it make up the majority of the war or was it only practiced for short times before actual battles?
 
Trench Warfare was rarely , if at all used. There were locations were fortifications were made, but the digging of trenches didn't start en masse until World War I. Before that it was standard military thinkning that large open areas to manouever troops were required.
The French were the slowest to adapt - they still had Musketeers in Red UNiforms, as easy targets for their opponents until the late 1800's
