How much truth is there in the theory that it is better to wound enemy soldiers

rather than kill them...? Quote below from Glacierwolf..............I hope you don't mind me quoting you Glacierwolf...
"On today's modern battlefield - we do not want a 45acp that kills. We want a 9mm that wounds. Kill an opponent - you remove one person from the battlefield. Wound an opponent - you remove three combatants from the battlefield - the one that got hit and the two needed to carry him back"
.....I have read this view many times and have wondered about its truth. When I did my training this wounding theory was never mentioned and I know that guys in the field would mutiny if their Lieutenant told them ..."Try not to kill the bastards"
So just where does this theory originate ?
