I need to have it done to pass inspection. The mechanic I went to said it would cost about $200. He also said he would need to fix my alignment. I know nothing about cars, is this necessary?

id do it my self and as 150 then go have it align 200 way high i think but you can call three shops and ask and call auto zone ask price on tie rod an dyes if tie rod bad its not align an dif it breaks you cant steer and go where the car wants to go so

costly for this easy replacement.
I'd ask a friend , but unless they know what they're doing.
Get a quote from an independent reputable shop owner.
That alignment is not always necessary if you measure
the old tie rod with the new one prior to installation.

yes the parts needs to be replace. and alignment after. for it to run good. and not wear out your tires. if it was mine i would do the job myself then go for an alignment.
