How much should I exercise?

If I walk/run 2-3 miles a day is that enough to help me to lose weight if I do it 5 days a week and I'm normally not active? Also is it ok if I just walk it rather than run? Would it be the same? I'm really fond of walking/running, it seems like the most convenient exercise for me, is there anything I should know that would help me lose weight a bit faster with this? Thanks!
