How much should I charge for a engagement photo shoot?

my photographer charges $500 if you are not using him for your wedding (its free with a wedding package) he gives you 3 hours of picture taking and a cd with all the pictures and the rights to them plus an album with the pictures printed in them. if you are not doing the extras i would say $150-$250 depending on how long it is going to take
 
Why don't you go to some websites like Olan Mills and Sears and see how much they charge for engagement pictures?
 
I'm not a professional photographer but I know how to capture great portraits with my SLR. It's for friends, but not close friends. I'd spend the day with them and hopefully get some great candid shots in the city. How much should I charge assuming they're happy with the result?
 
I think i would maybe ask around a lil bit. Meaning other photographers get some prices in mind. One thing make it clear to them your not hookin up friends this is a business,make sure you print out a agreement form/contract. Be Professional. I think all day for engagement shoot is a bit much.But my photographer is charging me for 2hrs $150.00 but alot of other things are included such as classic & environmental portraiture,online proofs and digital file for newspaper use.
